pre-construction

View into the HT area from the lobby area. That's an 8 foot opening into the main room.
IMG_1724.JPG
The far wall will be the screen wall. I've removed a few ceiling panels here to have a look above. The window will be covered over with a removeable panel and hidden behind the screen. The main HT area here is approx. 19' x 13'.
IMG_1725.JPG
This little nook on the left side of the HT is where the previous owners had their entertainment center (oriented "sideways" across the room. I will put some movie posters and shelving for DVD storage in this area.
IMG_1729.JPG
Another view of the nook as it was used by previous owners.

View from the front looking toward the back.
IMG_1726.JPG
Another view of the screen wall.
IMG_1730.JPG
Front left side of screen wall. Soffit is actually mostly empty behind. Ductwork inside actually terminates several feet back from screen wall. I will make a similar sized soffit/front for the screen wall that will hide the front center speaker and drapery mechanisim. The soffit and proscenium will be a simple open frame covered with fabric.
IMG_1728.JPG
This view is looking toward what will be the screen wall, from the far end of the room. The total length of the room is just over 40'.
IMG_1723.JPG
Closer view of the far back wall, opposite the screen wall.
IMG_1732.JPG
This shot is taken from the left side nook area looking back. The walls will be repainted (as will the ceiling) and the lights replaced. I'll probably have to move some of the wall-mounted lights as well. Hopefully not too much tearing into the walls will be required.
IMG_1733.JPG
View from about the mid point in the room. Good shot of the icky lights.
IMG_1734.JPG
HUUUUGE pocket door. 8 feet long.
IMG_1735.JPG
Need to invite friends over to help move the door. It's REALLY REALLY HEAVY.

IMG_1737.JPG
Closed now. I had to call for help to get out. :)
IMG_1738.JPG
An 8ft pocket door needs an 8ft wall to slide into. Behind that wall is the bathroom. I really don't relish the idea of tearing all that out, I'm going to leave it for now.

From future theater screen wall looking back.

This under stair area will house the equipment. For now, access will be via the bifold doors. If I decide to close off the HT area completely, I will build in a rack on the right side that will open into the room. That will put it right next to the seating area.
IMG_1741.JPG
Another shot of under stairs. The area to the left here will have a counter/concession built into the corner.
IMG_1748.JPG
Better view of lobby/concession area. Stairs to main level are just behind the wall on the right.

IMG_1757.JPG
View of HT screen wall with screen and stage areas marked out with masking tape. This is the first translation of paper (computer) plans to the real room, turns out it is pretty close. Stage will be about 8" high.
IMG_1758.JPG
Stage & screen taped out. The window will have a removable friction-fit cover over it, and the wall will be fabric covered. I think I'll need to drop the screen down a bit to accomodate the center channel speaker. Also, I'd like the front fascia on the proscenium to be down at the same height as the soffit.

From the right side looking forward.
IMG_1760.JPG
Rectangle marks out the riser location. I think it should actually be a bit deeper, so the front of the riser will probably another foot closer to the front of the room (closer to camera in this pic). That stub wall on the right is at about 19'6" from the screen wall. If I decide to close off the HT room, I'll build a back wall to meet up with the stub and put the door where the gap between stub and riser is. The gap is approx 30".
IMG_1761.JPG
View from back of HT to front. Area marked on the floor will be an 8" riser for the second row seating.
IMG_1762.JPG
View of riser area from other side. The extra bits of tape sticking out are because I marked the tape with various measurements and was experimenting with locations.
